Three Women, One Office

Can three women work together and get along? I have worked in the same office for twelve years, with a variety of different women. Guess what? We have never gotten along!

work in a large middle school front office.  I work with two other women; we are all in our early 50’s.  Being there the longest, I can attest that an odd number of women working in close quarters just doesn’t work.  For instance, in my current situation, one of the ladies wants to be the boss and “boss” myself and the other woman around.  I am waving the white flag.  I don’t care any more.  Knock yourself out!!  Deb can have all the glory, and I don’t honestly care.  I guess I’m just tired of fighting a no-win situation.

Our principal, Doris, likes her so we don’t stand a chance.  We ALL do a good job, and get excellent yearly reviews.  Did you ever get asked a question, and everyone chimes in with the answer?  Yep.  Happens daily in our office.  I have tried talking over Deb, who continues to talk.  Why am I wasting my energy?  Who cares?  Diane, person number three in our office, can block all of these annoyances out.  If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em is exactly the attitude I am taking.  Too many frustrating days, going home and being annoyed to the point I can stop thinking about the situation.  Doesn’t get me anywhere!

I know I am not perfect, and am sure I annoy Deb and Diane.  This is the crux of the issue.  We all annoy each other and we don’t even know it.  I can’t stand it when I hear their annoying voices, humming church hymns or constantly talking about nothing.  I’m sure they can’t stand it when I play my music while doing my work, complaining (I’m good at that), being TOO nice to our students or walking away from my desk and being gone too long.

Letting it all go is what I am working on!  Maybe hiring one more person to make it an even number would work, or partitions so we don’t have to communicate.  It is what it is, and I have to learn to let it roll off my back.  Because, when it comes right down to it, the situation won’t change – maybe a new job for me is on the horizon!!!
