How to ensure your hints don’t fall on deaf ears.

These days women are in control of everything in their lives and aren’t happy to leave anything to chance. When it comes to your engagement ring why would you be? After all your the one who has to wear it for the rest of your life. Here’s how to get the ring you want without ruining the romance:

The first thing you have to do is research exactly what style you want. Visit jewleers to see how your dream setting actually looks on your hand. The Four C’s of diamonds – clarity, colour, cut and carat – will soon be your new mantra.

It should always be up to your partner to decide how much he’s prepared to spend on your ring, but make sure he has an idea of what you’re expecting. He may not see it as being that important and so choose a budget option, so ensure he understands it’s meaning to you.

Once you know what you want, let him know – subtly. It’s best if he thinks it’s been his decision. Ask a friend to mention the ring you want in passing or raise the subject casually to a friend while he’s in listening distance. A walk-by of the jewellery store can also be helpful. Take a look in the window and mention you love a particular cut or setting.

Spark an interest by appealing to his analytical side. As soon as he starts comparing C’s with H’s he will be taking ownership of the decision. Men also like to feel they re getting the best deal, so let him hunt around for a good price.

If you feel you’re hints are falling on deaf ears and you’re worried you might end up with a ring that’s so not you, make up a story about a friend who went ring-shopping with her partner after he proposed. Tell him what a great idea you think that is. After all you’ll only ever have one engagement ring and you want to get it right.
