In 1993 the World Conference on Human Rights drew attention to the social problem of violence against women. Since then it has been an important issue internationally recognized, and various governments and agencies of the UN have declared their opposition to this form of violence. In addition, the third of the Millennium Development Goals aims to "promote gender equality and empower women".
