According to the Chinese, the pearl was the hidden soul of the oyster. The pearl was among the first to adorn mankind. Unlike precious metals worked from stones and ores that needed to be faceted and polished, pearls arrived in an already ready form that ancient peoples could use. In several religions, pearls stand as a symbol of virtue, wisdom and wealth.
