The domestic division of labour refers to the roles that men and women play in relation to housework and childcare. In the traditional nuclear family, the roles of husbands and wives were separate and distinct from one another and there was a clear domestic division of labour in relation to housework, childcare and paid work, however, sociologists such as Elizabeth Bott investigated the family to find that there were segregated conjugal roles in some families, yet a joint conjugal role exists in others.
