In premature infants, vitamin E deficiency causes problems in the eye (retinopathy) and brain hemorrhage. Both of these can also be caused by exposure to high levels of oxygen in the incubator. In the older children, a deficiency of vitamin E will lead to impaired absorption in the intestine and the symptoms are similar to nerve disorders, such as decreased reflexes, difficulty walking, double vision, loss of position sense and muscle weakness.
