What Makes a Friend?

Our expectations have a lot to do with whom we choose for friends.
Our expectations have a lot to do with what we say we want in a friend. Most of us would say we want loyalty in a friend, someone who will be with us in whatever we face in life. Honesty is another quality we look for in someone we allow to be close to us. Unselfishness goes a long way. And so the list can go.
We talk about these things, but how do we know they are present in the people we pick to be friends? How is a friend different from an acquaintance? It takes time to build a true friendship because a friend proves him or herself. In life there are many persons who come and go in our lives, but we are fortunate if there come to be one or two who are friends in the sense that Jesus gave us to test friendship. In John 15 he says that a friend is one for whom we would give up our life if it is necessary. That is the ultimate in friendship. I’ll settle for a good dose of loyalty and honesty, and hope I would have the courage to give my life for a real friend. How about you?

you are right, one should not expect much, if you really want to enjoy relationships.

Should I ever find a person that is truly a friend to me and not just an acquaintance, yes I would give my life.
