Why I Hate Vintage Clothing Fashion

I really and truly hate vintage. Why? Where to begin…

Firstly it seems that “vintage” most often means “ugly”. There’s a very good reason people stopped wearing polyester ugly print dresses in the 70’s. It seems we have forgotten the lessons of our parents.

But the main reason I hate it is that charity shops have now become “vintage sellers”. Oxfam has now become pretty pricey round our way. Why? Because the same clothes that were classified as “old” and “second hand” a few years ago are now “vintage.” Charity shops always served a dual purpose; to raise money for charities and to provide cheaper items to people that couldn’t afford to buy new.

It seems charity shops have gone the same way as boot sales did after all those antiques programmes. A battered old plate became and original collectors piece, and the price went through the roof. There’s nothing wrong with admiring an antique but old is just old.

Charity shops used to be an ethical way of shopping for people on lower incomes. We can’t all afford to buy fair trade clothes. But why shell out money for a dress in a charity shop when you could buy three new ones for the same price in Primark or Walmart? It seems having principles costs money.

It’s not too great a surprise, since most charities are now run as big business. Profit over principles. One charity shop near us even bought a load of items from the shop of a smaller charity, and stuck their own labels over them for five times the price!

It’ll all come to an end when “retro” gets fazes out in favor of whatever come next. And it can’t come soon enough.

I’ve recently discovered that less than 2% of the profits made by my local humane society (whom have recently jacked up their prices)is the only money going towards animals in need. Where’s the other more than 98%!?!?

i agree these charity shops are a rip off. they sell supermarket clothes second hand at a higher price than the supermarket did originaly. The tat they call collectables in thoose shops is worthless. i hate them full stop now. id clap my hands if every one closed down.half of the people who work in them take the good stuff when sorting through it dont be fooled in to thinking your stuff you donate is going to the charity because its not. half the time the volantears take the stuff thats good an put the tat out. every one i use to go in had the same type of stuff. who decides what is collectable in those shops prob someone who has the brain of an ant. as these are the type that these places attract the volantears cant be that intelligent can they. i rest my case i hate these shops an never go in now.

This is happening in the States as well. A lot of this so-called vintage stuff use to be hung up in costume and antique stores for under $50 dollars. Now that old clothes have been reclassified as “vintage” the prices are insane. Yet another rip off scheme.
