Dressing Smart

One morning you wake up, ready to hit some stores with your bed friend, and it is sizzling hot outside. Being the smart girl you are you slip into a light white summer dress, only to find yourself two hours later dripping wet in a little see-through problem…

Just because the sun is out is no guarantee things will stay as hot as you might like to. The idea is that you dress such that you don’t have to haul around a big gym bag with alternative outfits all day, and, tempting as it might seem not be forced to buy a new outfit.

So what to do if the weather can’t make up its mind? In cases when the weather-person on TV predicts “sunny weather with a chance of showers in the afternoon” you want to be adequately prepared for both. Especially if you are going to be out on a road all day, whether that be shopping or on go-sees with agencies. It would be a sin to walk around with long dark pants during the sunny part of the day, and an absolute disaster not to when showers hit. The last thing you want is to catch a flu or even just look drowned in front of an agent.

There is a basic rule of thumb; always wear a shirt and a skirt when the weather might change. As soon as it starts to rain you pull a neatly folded thin pair of trousers out of your bag that match the shirt you were already wearing. This way you don’t need to carry around a complete change of clothes, just one extra little thing. Make sure your shoes match and you are good to go. It rarely goes from hot to very cold in a few hours, so in general thin summer pants that can be folded into a small package should fit perfectly with all requirements.

Another good thing to take with you is a thin zip-up sweater in a neutral color or a blazer. They come in handy when people don’t have a notion on AC strength and many don’t; resulting in cold buildings while you can fry and egg on the pavement outside. Choose a blazer if you want to look more professional and a sweater for something casual like hanging out with friends. If they are still lacking in your closet and you go out to buy one resist the temptation of getting a cheery bright orange version; it might just not blend in terribly well with some of your green or red clothes. Always go for neutral colors if you are not swimming in money yet, they will go with everything and you can use and abuse it endlessly.

A crucial thing to remember this summer is to pack light, both in weight and color. Be practical and next time you go shopping look for clothing you can “take off” when it gets hot yet put on with whatever outfit you choose to wear the next morning.
