Proper Beard and Moustache Maintenance

It is a common misconception that you need to wash your beard daily.

Sadly overzealous washing can strip the hair of its natural oils, leaving your facial hair feeling coarse and dry.

The other side of the coin is that you don’t want to end up like Mr. Twit with remnants of your tinned sardines and cornflakes setting up shop in your beard!

I recommend washing your facial hair every 2-3 days, no more and no less.

First things first, it is important to recognise that hair on the face is usually thicker than that which grows on your head depending on your ethnicity. For most skin types a massaging motion is very beneficial. The goal is to not only clean your hair but also the skin beneath, this needs love too! This again brings me to the choice of shampoos and conditioners.

In my opinion try never to use a bar of soap or anything with a high alcohol content as this will be more detrimental than favourable. In long and short term your hair can turn raspy and dry like the voice of delta blues singer. But if this unkempt look is what floats your boat then I wish you the best. To avoid this use something nourishing and creamy, free from harsh additives and excessive fragrances and perfumes.

Until Foad Wax brings out its own lustrous line of shampoos and conditioners I can only recommend Palmers Olive Oil or Coconut Oil Formula with Vitamin E range. It’s lush and works a treat.

Once washed and conditioned it’s time to dry, but wait, what are you doing! Vigorously towel drying? STOP! Have you taken leave of your senses?! This isn’t your bonce barnet this is your face fuzz! Come on chaps; give it some TLC, it’s there to make you look dapper and sexy; the least you can do is treat with respect.

My advice is to use a flannel and pat dry, smoothing in light downward motions. Once most but not all of its moisture has been depleted, you’re ready for the next step.

Depending on the length of your moustache and or beard, brush or comb the hair to where it naturally wants to rest and follow its growth pattern. This will aid in the prevention of tangling as well as maintain its luster.

Now comes the exciting, and might I add, optional part of waxing and styling. You are going to want to buy moustache wax so you can style your moustache or beard. This process is a very personal outing and it all depends on the occasion, attire or mood that you’re in. If you’re sporting a smart but casual feel then perhaps you don’t feel the need. Maybe just use a little Foad Wax to reel in any stragglers and get them back in line. If you’re feeling a bit devil may care then go as big and as bold as you dare!
