When Pregnancy Was Fun

For a generation who can’t wait for a light to turn green or two minutes to warm dinner in the microwave, they can now buy a home pregnancy test, pee on a strip of paper and be shopping at “Babies R Us” within the hour.

I can remember when human pregnancy was fun. There were no diet restrictions, no exercise classes to take, we were allowed to drink coffee or cocktails, smoke cigarettes or an occassional cigar if we wanted it.

We were still allowed to soak up some rays on the beach, and people were so darn nice and thoughtful toward you. The expecting mother was special. She was handled like fine china, delicate porcelain. It was as close as any of us would ever come to our 15 minutes of fame in this world! And then medical science, and the OBGYN became experts, and decreed smoking (cigarettes or cigars) is bad for you and your unborn child.

The sun was bad, coffee was bad, cocktails were out of the question and diet restrictions became an important topic; ‘No Fat- Pregant Women’ allowed anymore! Pregnant women began exercising, arobics, jogging, running marathons, swimming the English channel.

Now carrying a little bundle of joy for nine months has become ordinary and uneventful, full of restrictions and rules, and classes to attend. And soon, I heard told; That with a few physical adjustments, men one day in the near future, could give birth!

I only hope I live long enough to see it!
