What is My Influence?

The reality that we impact those around us, even when we think nobody is watching, should make us think.

I’m certainly not climbing the charts to greatness, reaching the masses with my eloquent writing, but I did notice that 51 people read my articles today, or at least clicked on them.  Knowing that, I hope that what I had to say was informative, enjoyable and affirming in some way.

Each person’s story is different, and I believe that things happen for a reason.  If I was a part of someone’s life story, even if just my words and just for a few seconds, I hope it made a positive difference.

I know the power of a kind word, courtesy of my youngest daughter.  It has not been an easy summer for me.  Many changes have transpired, some necessary and good and some unfortunate and cruel, but I don’t do particularly well either change, no matter what kind.

It seemed for a while that I cried daily, sometimes several times a day, and I felt very alone and helpless.  One morning, in the midst of all this, I was sitting on my customary spot on the sofa, trying to take some comfort from my devotional reading.  My youngest daughter came down the stairs and out of the blue, said, “Mom, you are such a good person.”  I asked, “Why do you say that?” She answered, “Because you try to do your best and live for God every day.”  Wow!  I couldn’t have been more humbled, appreciative or comforted by anything.

Instantly, her words had given me hope.  I had seen myself as a failure, a weakling, unable to cope with everyday life, despised, rejected and hopeless, but she, one of the people I most want to postively impact more than anyone else, saw me as a good person.  All was not lost after all!

I can’t say that life has been awesome since then.  Struggles continue, but in one moment, I was reminded that being faithful in the little things, even when I don’t know what else to do, matters.  So, if you are drowning in doubt and despair, remember that you do have an impact.  You matter! ““Can a mother forget the baby at her breast  and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,  I will not forget you!  See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;   your walls are ever before me.” Isaiah 49:14-16
