What Every New Mother Should Know

Before I had my son, I imagined there were a lot of little things about raising a baby I had to learn. But I supposed given the fact that I was the eldest of four kids, I’d pretty much seen and heard it all. After all, there is a 16 year age difference between me and my baby sister. But the joke was on me and little did I know just what parenting entailed.

First off, I didn’t realize that little milk-sucking vampires really existed. I mean I know the difference between night and day and hoped my baby Caleb, would come to terms with this too.  But the “sooner” I had hoped for has vanished far beyond a dismal “later” so needless to say, I’m still waiting.

Before I fell pregnant, I had a fairly decent body. The curves were where they should be and I was fairly happy with the shape of things, but no one had told me that after I had my baby boy my body would still very much look like it was seven months pregnant.

I also learned to eat fast, knowing if I didn’t, I’d end up eating my meals cold.

My time conservation became impeccable.  I especially learned to manage my bath time efficiently, because sure as there are seas and shores, my baby senses when I’m in the shower and pitches elaborate fits at these moments.  So when you face these moments of desperation perhaps you’ll do what I’ve done a few times in the past – shave one leg and get to the other one tomorrow. And lastly, you learn that silence, a thing often taken for granted, has now become a thing of sanctity when your baby sleeps.

I think it’s safe to say that there were a lot of little parenting details I lacked until the magical day our precious little one arrived. When that happened, we pretty much had to hit the ground running. But let me re-assure you of something wonderful that I have learned. Somewhere between the dark midnight hours and the early morning feedings, you will know that there is no greater love you’ll ever experience than the love you will feel for your baby.  Sure you have to make changes but being a parent brings out the best in you
