Watch Me Run!

The Bible says in Romans 12:1 that we are "surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses," watching us run the spiritual race set before us. What an encouraging thought!

Years ago, when my oldest daughter was in grade school, although she was very athletic (a wonderful gymnast, in fact), she didn’t really enjoy running, but it was required in her physical education class.  Because I was a stay-at-home mom then, I would sometimes visit the school to have lunch with my kids and stay to watch them play on the playground for a few minutes.

One day, on such a visit, I happened upon P.E. class, and the students were running.  I spotted my daughter and I knew that she saw me.  She finished her race much faster than usual, evidently, and her teacher said to me, “You should come to watch her run all the time!”  Just knowing that someone was there, cheering her on, must have made a mundane and strenuous task much easier.

I think we are much the same, even into adulthood.  If we just know that someone is “in our corner,” we run a little faster, jump a little higher and try a little harder.  Perhaps that is why Romans 12:1 tells us, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

Think about that!  Not just one, but many are watching our spiritual journey, and they want us to win.  Just this week, I came across this Scripture, and it made me sad:

It reads, “You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you” (Galatians 5:7,8).

If this applies to you as it sometimes does to me, it would do us well to recall the many heavenly spectators who want us to win the prize, instead of listening to the one (or many) who would rather “cut us off” in our quest for spiritual life and victory.

Like Paul, we must declare, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14).  We have everything to gain, and our fans are watching!
