Pregnancy can be an uncomfortable experience for some mothers. Forget about the glowing skin and boundless cheer that always seem to accompany pregnancy in the movies. In real life, many expectant mothers admit to feeling nervous, tired, and achy. But instead of taking pills, pre- and postnatal spa treatments can help women feel better, during and after pregnancy.
Prenatal Spa….” Baby Is on the Way”…Do’s and Dont’s
Prenatal spas care for pregnant women with bathing and spa rituals that have been adopted and adapted from generation to generation. Spa-like pampering for expectant mothers is nothing new, especially in Asia, having been around for hundreds of years. And generations of women can attest that these treatments are safe, as long as some basic precautions are taken. Here are the rules for a safe prenatal spa experience:
In the Spa ( Dos )
- Always inform any spa you visit of your pregnancy. The best time to go to the spa is when your pregnancy has passed the first trimester, because then the foetus can tolerate the pressure and gentle strokes of a massage.
- Request the therapist who is professionally trained and experienced in dealing with pregnant women.
- Consider a massage with plain carrier oil ( no scent ). To keep the elasticity of a mother’s skin, use olive oil to reduce stretch marks and prevent itchiness and dry skin.
- The safest position for a pregnant woman is on her side, which is the most comfortable and strain-free pose. You will also be supported with pillows, cushions, and towels, so you can completely relax. It’s also fine if moms want to be seated during the treatment.
- Basically, the entire body, including arms, hands, legs, feet, lower back, head, shoulders, and breasts can be safely massaged. However, ask the therapist to maintain a gentle pressure.
Treatments to Avoid ( Don’ts )
- Saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, and the application of hot stones can significantly stimulate the pores and increase body temperature.
- Using essential oils like basil, cedar wood, jasmine, juniper, sage, and thyme could have a negative effect on the body’s neuron system and stimulate contractions.
- A firm massage on the lower back could cause tension in the cervix because of the strong pressure.
- Reflexology on reproduction points, like the back part of the foot, between the ankle and heel, should be avoid.
- Detox and cellulite treatments could have negative effects on mother and baby.
Thank you.
