Simple methods of bonding with your baby.
Bonding is one of the most important things you can do for an infant. Some parents may require a little longer to bond with their baby. Sometimes fear, or feeling of being helpless may over-come the parent due to other circumstances in their life. Don’t worry, the bonding will occur with a few simple expressions of love.
Bonding with an infant is one of the most important aspects of their development.
All infants respond to being held, cuddled and comforted by the human touch. Studies have shown that even preemies need to be lightly stroked as soon as it is safely possible.
Speak to your baby in a normal tone, they will recognize your voice and will often be soothed by voice alone. Take advantage of every opportunity to talk to and cuddle your baby. You can hum, sing, or read to the infant, it is soothing to them and also helps them develop language skills.
Although your baby may not understand what you are saying, it doesn’t matter, just hearing your voice will give them confidence that you are there and they will feel comfortable and happy.
Giving your infant a light massage offers an excellent bonding time. Infant massages must be done carefully, in a very light and controlled manner.
For a very tiny infant, use only two or three fingers and gently massage their tiny shoulders and back. A softly administered full body massage including the hands, fingers, and toes will offer comfort, and encourage physical development for babies of all ages.
Bathing is an excellent time for bonding . Since infants have a natural fear of water, keep a hand on them and speak softly during bathing to sooth them and help them feel secure. A warm towel and some cuddling after the bath is also comforting.
The perfect bonding time with your infant is during feeding. Whether you are natural feeding or bottle feeding it is important to hold the infant close and allow them the comforting contact of your softness and warmth.
It is very important for infants to be in their crib while sleeping and resting. Never take an infant into bed with you. Sleeping with the baby is very dangerous and is not the time for trying to bond with them.
Most of all just let your natural instinct and love lead the way to a happy relationship with your baby.
Studies have shown that successful parental bonding will most likely result in a well adjusted and self-confident adult.
