A lot of advice is given to a new mother and at times even strangers may walk up and offer their suggestion on how to remove cradle cap. You may have your mother-in-law giving you a disapproving look and saying that when your husband was two weeks old he slept through the night. There will be an interesting story from your neighbor on how you can solve the teething problems of the baby with a teaspoon of Jack Daniels.
You don’t have to worry as this is only for a short time and at times these advices may even be useful for the baby. The other problem here, how do you know what is good advice and what is crap? It is quite tough and you can go to a few places to get some good help.
Prior to taking advice from anyone, first judge what kind of a mother they are according to you. In case your friend is one of the best mom’s you know, and is more experienced than you she will give you helpful suggestions, but in case your neighbor’s children have become alcoholics, you can’t be sure about her Jack Daniels idea. The bottom line is that the advice can be considered if you are comfortable using it on your baby. Each mother and child is different, and the advice may not be right for everyone.
Other than the mothers you can trust, you can also take advice from your pediatrician. In fact when I had my first baby I used to call the pediatrician’s office several times a week for help and they were very helpful even when I was quite a nuisance. You can get answer for all kinds of questions, and you will also feel reassured that everything is fine.
There is another good place from where you can take advice, the baby care websites and books. There are several often asked questions which are answered systematically and you can check them out whenever you need the answers.
Last but not the least you can trust your gut feeling, even if you a Mom for the first time as you are the best person to know what is good for your baby, as this is your baby and you will do the best for him. It is true that some advice is good for all of us but if you have some faith in yourself it will do a lot of good.
