Are Stay at Home Moms Better Than Working Moms?

Is it Better to be a Stay at home mom or a Working mom?

When it comes to raising our children we want to give them the best possible life.  We want to teach them things that they will need to learn as they grow up.  Plus we want them to learn to be independent so that one day they will be capable of taking care of themselves. The question is: Does it matter if you are a stay at home mom or a working mom? Is one better than the other?

When I was pregnant with my daughter (what now seems a million years ago) I was working.  Unfortunately (or so I felt at the time) I lost my job in the middle of my pregnancy.  At that point it didn’t make sense to get a new job when I would only be able to work for a few months before having to go on maternity leave.  So, I stayed home and thought I would return to work (like most mom’s) when she was six weeks old.  That never happened and a few years later my son came along.  In the end I stayed home for seven years, and I loved every minute of it!

Being able to stay home with my children meant that I was able to keep a close eye on things.  I made sure my daughters homework was done right and I never missed any of my children’s “Firsts” (you know, the very first time they do something like standing or taking a step).  I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to work after being home all those years. Yet, all of a sudden I found myself applying for and getting a job.  From the very first day I started working I was miserable.  Having to put my children in daycare cut like a knife and the more I worked the more unraveled things seemed to get.  Before I knew it I barely had time to check my children’s homework much less make sure they had a bath every night and brushed their teeth.

I worked for another couple of years and just lost my job in March.  Being home again I am much happier and much more on top of things.  For me, being a stay at home mom is better.  However, I wonder what other mom’s think.  If you are a working mom do you feel like you still have things under control at home? Do you feel like you are still able to spend quality time with your children?  For stay at home mom’s, do you think you have things more under control than if you were working?  Is a stay at home mom better than a working mom?

Good article. But being a good mother or not depends on us and the way we are. I know many women who work and have children and they’re good mothers paying attention to all their needs. Meanwhile, others staying at home all day miss out way too many things, especially when it comes to education. On the other hand, I think women should work and have economic independence. Thanks for sharing.
