I Married an Angel

My husband and I will have been married for 41 years in March. We met in college. His blond hair and blue eyes did it for me. He definitely has achieved "Angel Status" after all these years!

1.  I asked him to marry me and he said, “Yes.”

2.  We eloped, and he told my parents he would make sure I finished college.  I did.

3.  My kidney disease came back when we had only been married for one year.  When I got out of the hospital, I was greeted by a flower garden he had planted just for me.

4.  I battled kidney disease and the depression that came with it for 13 years.  He would sleep outside the bedroom door because I kept getting up saying,  “I need to take my medicine.”  I had already taken it, but was so ill, I could not remember.

5.  I was only able to have one child due to my illness.  He cared for that baby boy all by himself for months when I had to go back into the hospital.

6.  He gave me a son who has also reached “Angel Status.”  My son is a gentle, kind, loving, intelligent, sensitive man, just like his father.  He will be here today because he and his father are writing a book together.  He has his father’s penetrating blue eyes and towers over both of us.  I can’t believe that drop-dead-gorgeous man is our son.  My son is God’s gift to us.

7.  When I wake up in the morning, my husband says, “Look how pretty you are!”   If my son is here, he says, “Look how cute your mother is!”  I am 62 years-old for Heaven’s sake!  Love is blind.

8.  My husband retired when I was still teaching.  My parents lean on their son-in-law.  He has taken them to the emergency room, doctor’s appointments, cooked their food, shoveled snow a 5:00 a.m. from their driveway, and taken care of their home repairs.

9.  He cooks special vegetarian dinners for me.  He tries all types of recipes.  His vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie is delicious.

10.  The ladies at Dominick’s love him.  They give him free flower bouquets to take home to his wife. He often buys bouquets to bring to me for no reason at all.

11.  He lost his father last year.  His father adopted him when he was 6 years old.  He loved that man so.  He planted a tree in our yard to honor his dad.  I was so pleased that I could comfort and love him as much as he does me.

12.  I planned a field trip to Barnes and Noble bookstore for my reading class students.   I asked my principal if there was money available to give each student a few dollars to help with a book purchase.  My principal responded with a big “No.”  I related my predicament to my husband that evening.  His response to my dilemma was, “How much do you need?”  He wrote a check, and each student was able to purchase a book of their very own.

I could go on, but my eyes are tearing up due to the love I have for that man.  God has blessed me.  I am thankful.
