Desertion, Incest & Poverty

Desertion may be defined as willful abandonment, especially of one’s wife or husband without his or her consent. It is viewed as a violation of legal or moral obligations.

There are many different reasons that usually cause one spouse to desert the other or leave the home. Some of those reasons will lead to an eventual divorce; some will not. Generally, the reasons relate to some type of ongoing extreme behaviour or self-inflicted behaviour which the spouse is no longer willing to tolerate, such as:

1. The discovery of sexual infidelity by the spouse. The hurt and mistrust that result from an affair can often lead to a spouse leaving the home.

2. A spouse suffering physical injury at the hands of the partner.

3. Abuse in any form can lead to a person abandoning his/her spouse.

4. Problems mounting may cause frustration levels to reach to a point where the spouse refuses to stay in the home.
