The Style in Your Eyes

For some women, applying make-up is like brushing their teeth … almost second nature. For others, it’s one of those things they love and wish they could do, but just can’t get it right.

If you fall in the latter category, more than likely, thoughts of blending, or creating a smoky eye and using bronzers will confuse you. But be confused no more. This week, Flair embarks on a drive to ‘beautycate’ you through our new beauty series: Beauty Talk!

For this first instalment, we start with the basics – eyeliner. Simply lining the eyes can make a world of difference if done correctly. Eyeliner is the one item of make-up that many women choose to wear, as it enhances the eyes. And for newbies, it is one of the first and easiest ways to start experimenting.

There are three types to choose from: pencil, gel and liquid. Based on your comfort level and competence, you can experiment with any one.

Pencil

This is the most popular and, perhaps, easiest to use. To get a neatly drawn and natural-looking line, make sure the pencil is sharpened before use.

To get an idea of how thick or thin the line will be, test it by drawing a line on your hand or a piece of tissue.

If it’s not thin enough, sharpen it some more. If it’s too thin draw a few lines on a ply of tissue; this will make the point blunt, creating a thicker line.

Hold pencil like you would a writing pencil, using your other hand to pull the eye taut, lining from the outside inward.

Draw a thin unbroken line at the base of your lashes. For even and smooth application, opt to use a cream liner.

Gel

This can be easily applied with an angled or eyeliner brush.

Dip the tip of the brush in the gel, wiping off excess.

Sweep gently across as close to the root of the lashes as possible. Try not to blink until the gel dries as this can cause it to smudge. It is a great option because of its silky and smooth texture, and many women are now gravitating towards it because of the attractive colours to choose from.

Liquid

Using liquid eyeliners calls for more precision and gives a more intense and sharp effect.

If you haven’t mastered how to properly do it, practise on the back of your hand and then on your eyes.

A simple method to use the liquid liner is to start from the centre of the outer eyelid and extend outward. Then from the inner corner of the eye, you will draw a line back to the centre to connect with the existing line.

When applying eyeliner, the common method is to line eyes as close to the lash line as possible.

To eliminate contamination of products, change liquid eyeliners every six months.

Gel and pencil liners have a longer life span. Ensure that you frequently wash the brush used to apply the gel liner and sharpen the pencil liner for each use to eliminate the growth of bacteria.

Remember: instead of using the eyeliners, you can get creative with your eye shadows and line your eyes with them. With an eyeliner/angled brush you can add your favourite colour to your lash lines.
