Tips on protecting your skin during the summer. Just remembering a few basic rules can protect your skin for a lifetime.

With summer just around the corner, it’s never too late to start thinking about protecting your skin, no matter how old you are. A few basic rules can protect you and your family from harmful UV rays. It’s also a good idea to start protecting your children at an early age; if they learn now, they will continue protecting their skin throughout their life time.

  • Stay indoors or in shade in the peak hours of the day

The hours between 10 a.m. -4 p.m. is when the sun has the strongest rays. Even on cloudy or hazy days are dangerous. Be sure to protect yourself and your children. There is also more risk at the pool or beach because of the water reflection and wind.

  • Everyone is at risk

While pale skin is the most likely to burn, darker skin can burn also if they stay in the sun too long. Use protection no matter what skin tone you have.

  • Dress in protective clothing

Dressing in protective clothing is the best way, even more than sunscreen, to protect your skin from sun damage. Wear long sleeves, long pants, cotton is the best when it’s hot and always wear a hat or cap to protect your scalp and face from harmful UV rays.

  • Use sunscreen and use it often

It’s very important to use sunscreen. If you swim, reapply the sunscreen; dermatologists recommend an SPF of 30 or higher to prevent sunburn. You can also buy sunsticks to apply to your face, like under your eyes and on your nose. They stay on better than lotion and won’t run into your eyes. Also, don’t forget to protect your lips. Be sure to apply lip balm to protect your sensitive lips.

  • Stay covered

Staying out of direct sun light is the best way to prevent sun burn. Use an umbrella for long walks in the sun. If you have a little one, choose a stroller with a canopy. Your eyes also need protecting, so choose sun glasses with UV protection.

By following just a few basic rules, you can prevent painful sunburns and permanent skin damage. If you want a tan, try using self tanners. They work well and have improved over the years. Just be sure to read the directions before applying. Summer is a time to have fun, not a time to get burned.
