A few weeks ago I sustained an injury to my face. It couldn’t have been in a much worse position, at the side of my nose, right near my eye. About 2 weeks ago infection started to set in and it started to swell and it became painful. I’m not a wuss, and not wanting to waste his time, I didn’t go to the doctors straight away, thinking that it would go of it’s own accord in a few days.

How wrong was I??, not only did it not go, but in fact it started to get bigger and hence more painful. So finally I succumbed and made an appointment (I had to wait 3 days for that) and he told me it was an abcess (talk about stating the obvious) and gave me a weeks course of antibiotics.

I finished these yesterday but this ‘THING’ (which is how I will refer to it) seemed resistant to this form of treatment and continued to swell, becoming all the more painful. Unable to sleep for the third night running again last night, I decided that drastic action was called for, so at 2.30 this morning I drove to the hospital and went to the A&E department and pleaded with them to put an end to my suffering.

A nurse from the facial injury unit was summoned and after examination, she proceeded to stick a syringe into this inflamed thing which by now resembled a belisha beacon. As this wasn’t enough, she did this twice more (F****** Sadist!!) to take samples of the infection.

After she had scraped me from the ceiling, she sent me home with another course of antibiotics, instructing me to return the next day at 2pm to have it ’seen to’. I returned at the appointed time, where I was seen by a doctor who told me that he was going to make an incision in said thing under a local anaesthetic.

By this point, I wouldn’t have been bothered if he had said that he was going to cut my head off, and I thought he was when 2 nurses came into the room and started to lay out what can only be described as instruments of torture on a trolley. As I said, it was a big thing but 3 nursing staff? gosh, did I feel important…

The doctor carried out the procedure, cleaned it out with saline, inserted a drain into the open wound, covered half of my face with a dressing, and told me to rest tonight (well I wasn’t planning on training for the London marathon!) and told me to return tomorrow.

I went to bed at 6pm this evening thinking that after 9 hours sleep in 3 nights and the anaesthetic not quite having worn off, I might be able to ‘catch up’.

But, it wasn’t to be. I slept for nearly an hour before a friend rang. I woke with my uncovered eye in the pillow and for a few seconds, thought that I had gone blind. Of course, I couldn’t get back to sleep after this so here I am, at 3 o clock in the morning, with a drip in my face, still in pain, and still unable to sleep. …..Oh woe is me..

p.s…….. I know you can’t make me feel pretty or take away my pain, but if my plight has moved you at all, feel free to leave a sympathetic comment and show some love.
