How to Minimize Pain During a Wax

Waxing any part of your body is never going to be fun. Here’s how to make the process more bearable.

Choose Your Time Wisely

First thing in the morning is the best time to wax. When you’ve already had a long stressful day your nervous system is already irritated, so the afternoon or evening is the worst time. If you can, avoid waxing shortly before, after or during your menstruation as you will feel pain more acutely during this time. Mid-cycle is when your pain threshold will rise, so book an appointment then.

Pick an Expert

An experienced waxer will know how to best diffuse the pain of wax so do your research before making a booking. This is especially important when getting a bikini wax. Once you do find a good practitioner be sure to request her everytime you make an appointment.

Pain Relief

Taking an aspirin an hour or so before your appointment will help to take the edge off. Afterwards ice the area briefly and use a tea-tree oil cream to help fight inflammation and infection.

Waxing No-No’s

Never wax sun-burnt skin. Hot wax on burnt skin isn’t just painful, it can cause scarring. If you are on particular medications such as those to fight acne, avoid waxing as it can cause the skin to be ripped off. If you’ve had  a chemical peel don’t wax any area of your face.
