How to Get The Perfect Self-Tan

Tired of being pale and interesting? Properly applied, a self-tan can make you look slimmer and more healthy.

  1. Do not apply self-tan for the first time the night before your wedding! Practice a bit first.
  2. Do not shave or wax within 24 hours before or after applying the color.
  3. Start off by choosing a self-tan with a slight tint if you’re inexperienced – this will help you see where it’s been applied. Make sure that you choose the right type of self-tan. A cream base is better for normal to dry skin. A gel base is better for normal to oily skin and a mousse is better for an all-over lighter application.
  4. Also ensure that you get the correct color for your skin type. If you have very fair skin, start off with a light tan – going beach goddess bronze is just going to look strange.
  5. The day before you’re going to apply the tan, exfoliate and follow up with rich body butter.
  6. About 15minutes before application, moisturize with a hydrating body lotion. Concentrate especially on dry areas such as the elbows.
  7. Apply small amounts at a time and work in properly. Applying to much product will lead to streaks. Rather build the tan gradually.
  8. If you have an important event coming up, apply the self-tan at least two days before. This gives you time to develop the tan to the correct color and also allows you to correct errors.
  9. If applying self-tan to the face, cover eye-brows with petroleum jelly.
  10. Don’t use body self-tanner on your face unless the directions say you can.
  11. Follow the instructions to the letter – the company actually knows how its product should be used.
  12. Scrub your hands and fingernails well with soap and water after application.
  13. Remember to match your hands and feet with the rest of you. Blend down the color to the tops of both. After washing your hands, use your little finger to apply tan to them and then wash that finger well.
  14. Don’t brush your teeth or exercise for up to two hours after the tan has developed.
  15. If you aren’t using a self-tanner on your face as well, then you’re going to need to use a tinted cream or bronzing powder. The neck is naturally slightly lighter but should still blend into both your face and décolleté.
