Getting a Brazilian Can Kill You

Fashion dictates all manner of personal behaviour but what if it could kill you or make you lose who you are.
The trends in fashion wax and wane with waxing currently “in”. But when fashion is interested in areas not normally seen, it is a bit below the belt, by about four to six inches! Whilst selective logging can have a sustainable future, clear felling has some grave dangers that might not be immediately apparent.
1. Death and Injury
Chris Evans reporting in the Melbourne Age newspaper, details a woman who presented at a hospital emergency department with a high fever, in extreme pain and covered in rash extending from her groin to her chest, arms and neck. Whilst under general anesthetic she was examined and was found to be seriously infected with the origin being the site of her recent Brazilian. Once diagnosed, she was treated with antibiotics but without such care, she could have died.
This person did have a lowered immune system arising from diabetes but as reported in the article, waxing was a gross means of hair removal and caused micro trauma to the skin and a route for bacterial infection to enter the body. Anyone with a lowered immune system, which could even be from the stress and strain of normal living, should be warned.
But who cares, it’s a one off? The article goes on to say this was the most severe case of the 90 cases that turn up at emergency departments in Victoria each year. Most of these are from burns from the hot wax. 90 cases in Victoria with a population of four million would equate to 475 cases nationally in Australia, 1400 cases for the United Kingdom and 5000 cases for the USA, per year!
Severe trauma can result from vanity and in such a sensitive area. What would you tell the boss when you could not make it into work? Vanity is one of the seven deadly sins. Maybe this is payback time?
2. Denigration in Society
Whilst men have their so called fashion champions and role models: Brad Pitt, George Clooney, David Beckham, and for the older folk, Jack Nicholas, Robert Redford, Richard Gere as examples, they are there as they are. They can be unshaven ( we are talking faces!), sweaty, unkempt and disheveled. That is what we like about them, they just are.
A female friend once said to me how her boyfriend had stood in the doorway to the bedroom whilst she was dressing, his beer gut extending over his Y fronts, and calmly notified her as if it really mattered, “You’re putting on a bit of weight love”. Men feel they can be as they are but women have to abide by all these rules to make them “attractive”. Get a life! Woman are beautiful as they are, however they are. By accepting the Brazilian, you are accepting you are second class. That is a real danger and has some far reaching consequences.
Do not forget we are in a War, the War on Terrorism. Without going anywhere near the pros and cons of that one, the war has at least made us more aware of the other peoples and their traditions. As I understand, the standard Muslim practice is for women to be denuded, even if just for the wedding night. From a generation that burnt the bra, gave equal opportunity to women in law, moved women at least on paper to a hand in hand, side by side position to men in society, why do we suddenly want women to be girls, and little ones at that? Is pedophilia the new de rigour? The world focus on the disappearance of Madeline in Portugal would suggest otherwise, thankfully. Why do our women feel they should want to be in the same position as our enemies? No rights, no say, no self determination. It is a worry.
3. Denigration of Self
This is the real crux of the issue, women cannot be themselves. They are required as any woman will tell you, to be twice as good at their job to be given appreciation, (and then tolerate unbelievable sexual innuendo and abuse and have to smile though it), they are required to worship the God or Goddess of youth, be fit and active and be trim and pretty. And now suddenly, they have to be hairless where God presumably provided some hair for a reason.
Anytime you do anything just because a man wants you to, think very carefully as to why you should. We all do things to please our partners, children, parents, the boss, the neighbors and so on. But if it involves you denigrating and undermining who you are, tread carefully. Why are you giving something up and why should you be in a position that it is being demanded of you. Love is about who you really are, it does not have conditions.
The three dangers of a Brazilian, you could kill yourself, you could lose all the advances women have made and worst of all, you could lose yourself. I think that is pretty serious.

Germaine Greer and the rest of the womens movement from the sixties and seventies would be rolling around in angst as to where women have come to in the 2000’s. Well said Shaun.

People talk about it for hygiene reasons but the nicks you get from shaving, it is very unnatural. Do you know one of the “dirtiest” places on your body…..your mouth. Be proud to be you and not a Mattel toy. Well done Shaun.

Shaun, You are so right. Most women in fashion look like little girls, and the things many of us do for beauty is harmful and unnatural. The healthy thing to do is be as natural as possible.

I never would have thought of infection from waxing. A razor is good enough for legs and under arms for me anyway..the rest stays right where God meant it to be.
Really great article, Shaun.
