Labiaplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery that has become very popular of late and especially with young girls who believe themselves to be abnormal. It was reported by surgeons that in a single year period, 2005-06, the amount of women that were having this kind of surgery performed went up by around thirty percent.

Although surgeons have also reported that the women going forward for this surgery do have vaginas that could do with a bit of shaping, most of them actually have perfectly normal genitalia and had no real need for the surgery aside from making themselves feel better. So, what are the “real” medical reasons for having such a drastic form of cosmetic surgery on an area of the body that people do not see every day?

One of the most common complaints to warrant having a labiaplasty is that the vaginal lips are too long or with one being longer or more pronounced than the other. This will not only have a knock on effect on the confidence of a woman but can also affect their lives sexually and prevent them from having sex or being seen without their clothes present. Aside from the mental nature of the problems that can be faced with problems such as this, there are a number of other complaints that have been recognized including problems with the urinary system and also hygiene worries. Women suffering from having different lengths of vaginal lips or over pronounced labia very often state that they are concerned that they are not cleaning the area as thoroughly as they would had the lips been shorter or firmer.

Discomfort is very often another contributing factor to whether or not women choose to have labiaplasty. The rubbing or chafing of the labia when working out or exercising and also when doing everyday tasks such as taking the children to school or doing the housework can cause nasty sores and pain which is easily resolved by labiaplasty.

With over pronounced labia, an increase in moisture around the area due to sweating or being unable to dry the area after showering can also lead to the chafing and sores but is also making the genitalia prone to infection and labiaplasty is actual advised when problems such as these are taken into consideration.

For those not seeing such medical problems with what they believe to be an uneven labia, the problem is simply down to self confidence and a comment from a partner is very often the reason why women opt for such drastic measures. With more women openly admitting to watching pornographic material with their partners, the need for a perfect vagina is becoming more and more. These girls on films such as these seem to be perfectly equipped within their nether regions and perhaps it is influences such as these that is causing women to want their bodies to be perfectly in proportion and in such a way that will please their sexual partners?
