Acne is a very common skin condition that thousands of people suffer with and it can be painful and embarrassing and one of the main questions that doctors are asked is how to get rid of it. However, unfortunately for those who suffer from it, there is no cure as such, just acne treatment that can be used to maintain it.
One of the main kinds of acne treatment that will be prescribed for those who suffer from mild or moderate acne is topical treatments. These come in the form of creams that will contain a mixture of ingredients and are to be directly applied to the whole affected area of acne and not just the individual spots. Although this acne treatment can cause some skin irritation, it is very effective and can temporarily reduce redness and also the appearance of the acne spots.
Another form of acne treatment is oral antibiotics. These are normally used alongside the topical treatments and are usually prescribed for a minimum of two months by your doctor or other healthcare professional. The treatment will normally be continued until they no longer have a positive effect on the acne and at this point they will be stopped and another acne treatment will be suggested.
For women that have acne, one of the most common acne treatments that will be given is the oral contraceptive pill. The most effective versions of this pill are the ones that contain hormone blockers which stop the skin producing so much oil. When the skin produces less oil there is less chance of bacteria affecting the area and therefore less chance of an acne breakout.
Isotretinoin is an acne treatment that can produce adverse side effects and will only be prescribed by a fully trained dermatologist. The course will normally last for around four months and if the medication is taken by a woman, pregnancy tests will need to be done during the course and before it starts to ensure that a baby cannot be harmed by this acne treatment. There are some concerns about this type of acne treatment and a consultation with a dermatologist and your doctor will need to take place before any medication is prescribed.
There are many ways in which the effects of acne can be lessened to make life much easier for those who suffer with it and the first thing that you should do if you have acne is to visit your doctor and get the treatment needed.
