Natural Meets Synthetic: Best of Both Worlds

The substance shown here are examples of natural ingredients that perform valuable roles in cosmetics, often aided by synthetic compounds.
Plant and animal products have been use as bases, colors and fragrances in makeup since ancient times. Today, some people believe that products that come from the earth instead of lab are somehow gentler and more compatible with our skin than synthetics.
But natural products are not always better than synthetics. For example, most make-up contains water, which fosters bacterial growth. Natural preservatives, such as rosemary oil and grape fruit seed extract, don’t prevent contamination early as well as synthetic compounds.
Moreover, synthetic ingredients also can help natural ingredients perform better. For example, sesame oil and water don’t mix, but adding synthetic emulsifier such as propyl glycol monostearate binds them together into a rich, spreadable foundation makeup base.
1. Citric Acid
derive from lemons or limes. Used as fragrance or preservative in make-up.
2. Annatto
A yellow-red dye derived from the seed of a tropical shrub. Used to color some cosmetics.
3. Beeswax
A base for lipstick and foundation make-up.
4. Kaolin
A mineral used in face powder and eye shadow to absorb oil and in mascara to ticken lashes.
5. Keratin
A protein derived from horns, hooves and feathers, Used in conditioning products.
6. Lecithin
Derived from soybeans. Used in cosmetics to bind ingredients together and prevent rancidity.
7. Menthol
An oil synthesized or derived from pepperment and other mints. Soothes the skin.
8. Sorbitol
Derived from berries, cherries, plums and pears. Attracts moisture and helps skin to feel smooth.
9. Zinc Oxide
A powdery mineral used to clean and protect the skin.
