If in doubt about your color choice, seek the consultation of a professional at a reputable makeup counter.

Red lipstick makes a strong statement. The secret to carrying off this look is to keep the rest of your makeup simple. When you’re boldly emphasizing the lips, you don’t want to go overboard with the eye makeup and blush or you’ll end up looking like a clown. If lips are bright, they should be the focus of the face.

How to wear red lipstick: Apply it correctly.

Start with a lip moisturizer first. Then apply a thin layer of foundation and powder on your lips to help set your red lipstick and allow it to last longer. Lightly line your lips with a lip pencil in a shade similar to your red lipstick. Apply your red lip color lightly to your lips. With a red shade, it’s important that you apply a thin coat so your look won’t be too overwhelming. Applying red lipstick with a makeup brush helps to ensure a light, even application. Lightly blot your lips with a tissue. Apply a second light coat of red lipstick and you’re ready to go.

How to wear red lipstick: Choose a more subtle look.

If you find the look of a red lipstick to be too overwhelming, opt for a more subtle lip gloss. This can give you a more subtle note of red that can be less intimidating. Save your red lipstick for evening wear or for special occasions. Remember, it can take some time to get used to a new makeup look.

I used to feel jealous of my friend who looked great with red lipstick. Later, I realized that it has something to do with my undertone. had a yellow undertone while she has a pinkish undertone. I now know how to shop for the right lipstick color. I haven’t had any problems since. :) I prefer matte red lipsticks, although the gloss kinda makes you look more juicy. LOL.
