If applied properly, base makeup can skillfully hide flaws and give your skin a youthful glow. Here are six base makeup mistakes you’ll want to avoid.
Are you less than satisfied with the base makeup you’ve chosen? If chosen correctly and applied properly, a good base makeup can enhance your skin’s appearance while covering minor flaws and imperfections. Unfortunately, if you choose the wrong color and apply it incorrectly, it can detract from the flawless skin appearance you’re trying to achieve. Do you make these base makeup mistakes?
Face Base Makeup Mistake – Choosing the wrong shade
Many women make the mistake of choosing a makeup foundation shade that’s too dark for their skin tone in an attempt to give their skin a sun kissed look. They usually just end up looking unnatural. It’s important to come as close to matching your natural skin tone as possible. Unfortunately, the light at many of the cosmetic counters is artificial and can alter your true skin color. If at all possible, try on base makeup in the presence of natural light. Before purchasing foundation from a makeup counter, walk around a bit and look at your skin under a variety of store lights as well as natural light. Carry a small mirror in your purse for viewing your skin under different lights.
Face Base Makeup Makeup Mistake – Choosing the wrong formulation for your skin type
If you have oily skin and are prone to breakouts, you need to choose a foundation that’s light, oil-free, and noncomedogenic to avoid unsightly outbreaks. Likewise, if your skin is dry, select a base makeup with added moisturizers and light reflectors to give your skin a moist appearance. Choose your foundation formulation based on your skin type.
Face Base Makeup Mistake – Applying foundation too heavily
You foundation should be applied with a light touch. More isn’t usually better and too much can give you a masked, unnatural appearance. If you have blemishes to cover, consider using a concealer with your foundation rather than applying heavy coats of makeup.
Face Base Makeup Mistake – Not using a foundation with an added sunscreen
Everyone needs a sunscreen to offset the aging effects of ultraviolet light on the skin. Many makeups have sunscreen added. Be sure to verify that your base makeup does have an added sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. If not, apply sunscreen before putting on your base makeup.
Base Makeup Mistake – Not setting your foundation
Once you’ve applied your base makeup, lightly add a coat of loose or compact powder in a shade that’s compatible with your own skin tone. This will help to give your foundation staying power and reduce the incidence of breakthrough shine.
Base Makeup Mistake – No preparing your skin properly before application
Skin should be cleansed with a cleanser appropriate to your skin type and lightly moisturized before applying your base makeup. If you have a tendency to have flaky skin lightly exfoliating to remove dead skin cells can vastly improve the final appearance of your skin after makeup application.
By avoiding these makeup mistakes, you can ensure that you’ll look pretty and fresh each time you step out the door in the morning.
