I started out just to tell you how to measure and care for your bra but came across research indicating that the more hours daily we wear our bras the more we may be risking breast cancer.

To wear a bra or not to wear a bra:

‘Every subtle bounce of the breast while moving, walking, running, etc. gently massages the breast and increases lymphatic flow and thus cleans the breast of toxins and wastes that arise from cellular metabolism.” all-natural.com

Lymphatic circulation is highly dependent on movement. Bras, particularly those with under wires constrict and should not be worn to bed. For some fascinating information regarding this study and the bearing it may have on breast cancer please read the article linked above.

A bra or brassiere which fits wrong can be uncomfortable and can also be unsightly. According to The Teen I want to be by Mary Ann Green 75% of females wear a bra that does not fit properly and going braless is harmful to the muscles which support the breasts while causing breasts to sag, lose their firmness and become out of shape.  Another site I consulted advised the percentage is higher, closer to 80% of females wearing improperly fitted bras.

Perhaps you are experiencing a growth spurt and need to purchase new bras because you have followed the advice in Booby Boosters. This article contains natural foods, supplements, and other natural ways to increase breast size, or maybe you are just not satisfied with the way your bra fits.

Other than comfort how can one tell if the bra does not fit properly?

·         Bulges appearing above the bra indicate the bra is too tight.

·         Wrinkles in the cup, a cup should fit smoothly.

·         Do you have to tighten the straps to get a better fit? Ms. Green advises that proper fit and support is obtained from the cup.

·         She suggests dropping one strap from your bra to see if the bra still stays in place. If not it is improperly sized. Does the back ride up throughout the day? Then the cups do not fit proper and you are adjusting the straps to get a better fit.

·         Can you insert two fingers comfortably under the band? If not adjust the hooks to the last position and try again. If still no, go up a bra size – Bra Sizing Guide

Here are tips to measure for the right bra size:

v  Gather a soft tape measure.

v  Stand erect.

v  Measure directly under your breast. This is called your band size or bra size. If the number is odd move it up to the next even number.

v  Measure the fullest part of your breast.

v  Measure directly under the arms and above the breasts. This is an optional measurement but will give a better fit.

I wasn’t aware that breast movement has such an impact on breast or mammary health.

If this is the case, then no wonder it is so important for a woman to wear a properly fitting bra.

Thanks for the help. My straps always fall down because my shoulders are so small. I also have problems with glasses because the bridge of my nose is too small and won’t hold up glasses. Then, when I was in highschool I had to freeze because we wore uniforms and the seeves were way too long on my arms.

A very helpful post, Judy. I have tried so many bras but there is only one which fits me properly and that had deeper sides and four hook fastenings, which many more endowed women need.

Pattiann, wow! You have my sympathy. Mine was the other way around, my feet were (still are) so big we couldn’t find shoes to fit me and I was so tall I looked like I wore my little sister’s clothes with my ankles and wrists poking out! :-)
But proper bra sizing is important and I hope this will assist you.

Melody, breast health is a very real concern for women. Thanks for your support.

    Jewelstar,

If I was writing strictly about breast cancer there would be many preventative measures I would mention. The constriction of bras and the cancer connection is just an amazing side note that some of us are not aware of.

Dee, the calculator is easy to use.

Ruby, I found this information interesting.

CA, the wrong size can make us pretty miserable. lol

Thanks for the support and God bless.
