How to Apply The Right Amount of Perfume

Applying just the right amount of perfume is an art. Here’s how to master it.

Nothing can improve a mood like a liberal spritz of your favourite fragrance, but if you are a bit too generous in your application you may find the people around you don’t share your new-found happiness. With that in mind here’s to apply your perfume like a pro:

Your scent should only be noticeable to others when they are close to you. If you get a reaction after walking into a room, you’ve gone too far. From your own perspective your fragrance should be subtle enough to remind you your wearing it, but shouldn’t drown out other scents around you.

There are four main fragrance families, floral, oriental, woody and fresh, each with their own strength. Fresh fruity notes tend to dissipate quickly so it’s hard to go wrong. Anything with an oriental base however will last much longer, meaning you’ll need to hold back.

Fragrance should be applied to your pulse points or for a subtler scent spritzed in the air while you walk through it. If you don’t trust your own nose when it comes to the power of your scent, try a scented body cream instead.

Don’t mix scents. If you’re wearing perfume choose un-scented deodorant and hair products. Competing fragrances can ruin the impact of perfume and while pleasant alone, fused together they could create an unpleasant combination.

Wear the right scents for the right occasion. During the day a fresh and subtle scent is best. If you want to inject a little power into your image at work try a woody fragrance, but keep it subtle. For a first date a sweet floral sends the right impression while a spicy oriental will create a sexy atmosphere.
