True Colors to Dye for

Do you fancy a new look? Are you contemplating a new hair color? Here is some advice to follow to ensure you do it right.

Reinventing your Color

  • Find pictures you like in a magazine and tear them out.  Try to ignore the style; just look for a color you like, even if it is on a celebrities dog!  If your colorist can match it, she will.
  • Try on wigs.  Holding different colors to your face gives you an idea of how your skin tone will look.
  • Ask your colorist, if they think your choice of color is right.  Be open to suggestion, as their experience could prove helpful.
  • Be brave – color can easily be resolved if it goes wrong.  Professionals can assess the condition of your hair and tell you what is best for your hair type.

Make-Up

Compliment your new color with the right make up.

  • Blond

    • DO go for a vivid lip color.  Pinks and blonds look beautiful with a fair skin tone.
    • DON’T overbronze as it can make you look brassy.
  • Brunette

    • DO go for bronze shades to compliment your warmer skin tone.
    • DO experiment, brunettes can get away with a variety of colors.
    • DON’T wear anything too citrus on your lips;  warmer colors are best.
  • Redhead

    • DO choose warm, earthy shades.
    • DON’T wear ultra highlighting products, this could reflect the hair color and exaggerate pinks in the skin.
  • Black

    • DO wear rich, warm shades.  A punchy color or smoky effect on eyes will compliment dark hair.
    • DON’T use too light a shade on your lips; it will make you appear washed out.

DIY Coloring

If you are going to use a home coloring kit, follow these easy tips, to avoid a disastrous result.

  • Always look at the back of the box for the end result; the photo on the front is not always a good indication of the color you will get.
  • Take note how long you need to leave it on for.  Too little and your hair will look dull and unfinished; too long and the color will be too  harsh.
  • For an even, professional looking color, coat the ends of your hair with a conditioner first.  The tips of the hair are more porous than the roots and so will absorb more color.
