Getting the most out of your salon manicure may depend on what you bring into the salon.  While many of the inexpensive nail salons that have sprung up in the metropolitan areas offer time saving convenience, most do not offer top of the line hand and nail care products.

Here are some tips recommended by experts for women who have professional manicures or pedicures:

  • Insist that all instruments be rinsed with an antiseptic cleanser in your presence.  It is your right and responsibility to decrease the risk of infection from salon instruments.  If you prefer, you can provide your own tools.
  • Do not hesitate to bring your favorite treatment products into the salon with you.  Just as some customers bring their favorite color polish, why not bring your favorite hand, foot, or nail creams?
  • To increase nail strength, use a nail hardener as both a base and top coat.  Ordinary clear polish is not designed to strengthen or protect nails.  A good hardener to try is a formaldehyde-free nail hardener with special polyester and nitro-cellulose ingredients to help prevent nail chipping and splitting.

It’s important to note that visible results of any treatment product depend on consistent use, as the effect is frequently cumulative.  Supplementing your at-home hand, nail, and foot care regimen with professional visits is a great way to improve the overall health and appearance of your hands and feet.
