The do’s and don’t’s about dying your hair at home or a salon.

Ok I guess I better start this thing by telling you I’m not a hair stylist, but I have been dying my hair now for almost ten years now. I have also made just about every mistake you can on your hair, and I just want to fill you in with my knowledge so you don’t make those mistakes too. At the same time you will not get bias information from me either. I don’t care now or will ever care if you go to a hair salon. I have dyed my hair just about every color under the sun, and hopefully I can answer any questions you have about hair dye.
Tip number One: Try to go at least 3 months before dye jobs.
Starting out BLONDE:
-And going BLONDE: Most of the time I tell people never dye their hair blonde at home using a kit, but if you already have blonde hair then it isn’t a big deal. Bleach is a strong chemical, so if you decide to do it at home make sure you put some conditioner or lotion around your hairline. If you decide to dye your hair again before the 3 months are up is really the only time I would suggest going to hair salon because the bleach could really damage your hair.
-And going BROWN: Brown is the color that is the easiest to achieve with a box. I would not waste your time doing that at a salon. The only warning I have is remember that since your hair is light the color is not going to turn out as dark as the box.
-And going RED/ORANGE: This is something I would NOT recommend doing at home. Red is already a hard color to achieve and if you are blonde then it could turn your hair pink. Trust me I know this one from experience. Also, I would not recommend trying a temporary red hair color because it can also accidentally permanently dye your hair pink. The only way I recommend doing this at home is by dying your hair brown and then three months later dying it red.
-And going BLACK: This something I personally haven’t done, so I can’t recommend doing this one at home. Even if I had, I still probably would recommend going to a salon. Blonde to black is the most drastic thing you can do. Once you dye your hair black there is no coming back. It is almost impossible to get it to become another color. Most the time to get back to your original color you have to grow it out and cut it off.
Tip number 2: Dying your hair doesn’t mean you have to use a box at your local store. If you know somebody with a cosmetology license you can actually get them to buy you professional products.
Starting out BROWN:
-And going BLONDE: This is something I do NOT recommend doing at home. Blonde is one of the hardest colors to achieve at home with a box. Doing at a home kit can make your hair a yellow color and not a consistent color.
-And going RED/ORANGE: This one is actually pretty easy to do at home. It may not turn out the exact color on the box, but it should end up a pretty color. The main thing about red is that there is to remember is that red is the hardest color to maintain. Red fades really fast, so I recommend dying your hair a darker color than what you want. Also I recommend investing in a good hair color preserver shampoo and conditioner.
-And going BLACK: This is something else that is fairly easy to do yourself at home, especially if you have a dark brown hair color already. This is something I wrote in the blonde section and I need to write here also is black is a color that does not go away. It is also not easy to dye your hair any other color. The only way to really get it out is to grow it out. Use with caution, but you shouldn’t have any problem doing it at home.
Starting out BLACK:
-And going BLONDE: This is something I do not recommend doing at home. I really don’t recommend anyone dying their hair blonde at home unless you already have blonde hair. It can turn your hair a really ugly color.
-And going BROWN: At the same time I said don’t dye your hair blonde you need to dye hair blonde first to get to any lighter color. Sometimes you can achieve a nice dark brown using a kit, but anything lighter is almost impossible without bleaching your hair first. I would recommend going to a salon to do this. You wouldn’t be doing a great risk doing it at home but it still would be a risk.
-And going RED: This is something you need to get done at a salon. Red is a difficult color, and for you to achieve it your hair must be bleached first. This is a really difficult thing to do even for someone who works at salon.
For red just look under BLACK, BROWN, and BLONDE.
I hope this helps on your decision on what to do about your hair. I know it is especially important to know with the economy is bad. Also if you have any questions feel free to post them in a comment.

So you’re practically saying don’t use a box && go to a salon in shorter terms lol. With the 3 exceptions … Didn’t help since I do NOT want to go to a salon. Lame. 1/5
