Please Don’t Bleach That Beautiful Brown Hair

Why do so many women spoil their lovely brown hair?

I love brown hair; I always have. I always will.

Yes, I like other hair colours too, like black and red, but brown has always been my favourite.

I am worried, though, that with the recent obsession with blondeness, brown hair is going to become as rare a sight as a butterfly these past two summers. Well, men still allow themselves to have it, but these last few years natural brown hair seems largely to have disappeared from women’s heads.

No, I don’t have it myself. My natural colour is fair. Brown has always been too dark to suit me. Back in my teens, I did try dying my hair a colour advertised as “hazlenut brown” once, but people kept on remarking that they didn’t realise that the area was haunted. Realising that I looked as pale as a ghost, I grew it out, and looked very strange in the process.

The fact remains, though, that I always wanted brown hair. Brown hair is so subtle; brown hair contains so many different colours; brown hair shows up shades of all types beautifully in the sunlight. Why on earth would anyone want to ruin it by putting in those artificial blonde streaks?

An awful lot of people with brown hair seem to believe that they have “mousy hair”. I don’t understand this; most of them don’t. Mousy hair, as far as I can see, is comparatively rare; it has a distinctive greyish look and seems to belong mainly to schoolboys who don’t like washing very much.

I hope that the fashion for blonde hair isn’t profit driven and anything to do with the fact that hairdressers make a rather a lot of money out of putting blonde streaks in brown hair. I wouldn’t like to think that they might possibly be encouraging anyone whose hair is mid brown or lighter to have them put in.

I even knew a woman with lovely dark brown hair who was persuaded by her hairdresser to have blonde streaks put in. Some women I know are paying £80 every six weeks or so to have their lovely brown hair disfigured.

I noted with interest, however, that several of the models in a recent edition of Sugar magazine have brown hair. Could it be that brown hair so coming back into fashion?

What a great article! You took the simplist of simple things and turned it into this whole big concept! I love it! And yes, I have brown hair!
