Tips on how to make your hair color last after you leave the salon.
Every time I color a clients hair, they ask me how to maintain the color. First thing anyone should know is that the healthier your hair, the better the color will be. If you choose to have your hair colored, discuss the desired color with your stylist. Make sure it’s the right color for you and make sure your stylist thinks your hair is healthy enough to take the color. There are other options to permanent color, if your hair is not healthy enough, you can try a semi-permanent color, it deposits only, no lift, so it’s not as damaging to your hair.
Once your hair is colored, it’s important to know how to care for it. When purchasing shampoo and conditioner, make sure it’s for colored hair. Also, using professional products is important. Have you ever wondered why your hair never looks like it does when you leave the salon? One reason is the products selected by your stylist.
You must also realize that each time you shampoo your hair; the color is going to fade a little, that’s why it’s important to use the correct shampoo. The darker the color, the more it fades, if your hair is dry or damaged it will not last either.
If possible, try not shampooing your hair every day. Every other day is sufficient enough. If you blow dry your hair, be sure and use a heat resistant product to protect your hair. Heat is one of the main day to day things that damages your hair. The temperature of the water should not be too hot either. Tepid or cool water will prolong the color as well.
- Select shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair
- Shampoo only when needed
- Use products to protect against heat damage
- Use cool or tepid water temperature
- Keep your hair healthy with regular trims
Doing these simple things can help your color stay vibrant and last, one last important reminder is to always tell your stylist about any medications you take; they can interfere with the results of your color. The stylist can treat your hair before a chemical service to strip the medication from your hair.

My hair dressing put permanent hair colour on my hair and it turned my roots (good 3 inchs) golden colour. My HD has now applied semi permanet colour over the top and its lovely colour. I am scared of washing my hair too much incase the golden tones start coming coming through as the semi P colour fades so quickly.
Will the golden colour ever fade.. I have arranged via my HD to have semi colour applied every 5 weeks.. will this work
