Extinction of Blonde Gene Hoax

One of many urban legends taken seriously by the media.

Since 1865 there have been various reports in newspapers, on TV and more recently on the Internet that there will come a time in the near future when there will be no more blonde-haired people born, usually around the middle of the Twenty-First Century.

Journalists are especially ignorant of the meaning of the recessive nature of alleles. The media is ignorant in general about science-related subjects and seems the need to water down technical ideas to make them more comprehensible to the general public. In this case they have misunderstood the science altogether. The fact that there are genes which code for darker hair, which are dominant over fair hair doesn’t mean that the those genes disappear, it just means they aren’t expressed. It’s possible that they will be passed on to the next generation.

The general consensus in the scientific community is that genes which code for blonde hair will not disappear for as long as having blonde hair is a threat to survival.
