Chemical hair processing can change your looks, make a statement, or simply give your ego a little boost, and a hair treatment will keep it resilient, shiny, and healthy between processes.

There is a reason hair takes longer to dry immediately after a chemical process. Following a chemical process with a professional treatment is a perfect time to ensure against damage. The cortex layer of hair gives it strength and elasticity. Chemical changes such as color, permanent wave or relaxers affect this layer of hair. The outer layer, or cuticle, is a scale-like layer of overlapping cells. This layer protects the cortex.

Products with high pH (Potential of Hydrogen) can cause swelling to the outer layer, allowing liquid to penetrate the cortex, which is why the hair retains more water after a chemical process. Many chemical hair processes have a high pH level, therefore, a calming treatment immediately after chemicals will sooth the swelling on the outer layer and provide restoration of strength and elasticity to the cortex.

Hair Care Products

There are many professional hair care products on the market that can be purchased in drug stores, department stores, and through a professional hair salon. Natural hair care products are very popular now and are easy to find in health food stores. But don’t forget, organic hair products can also be made directly from your refrigerator or pantry.

Ingredients to look for on the label would be those high in natural oils, proteins, and carbohydrates. Most professional hair products provide treatments that are specifically formulated to replenish necessary nutrients in your hair after a chemical treatment: Sabastian, Biolage, Loreal, KMS and Graham Webb, just to name a few.

Hair Treatment Frequency

Though your professional stylist will more than likely perform a treatment after a chemical process, it is very wise to give yourself follow-up treatments at home once a week, even though you are using a conditioner after every shampoo. This will ensure healthy hair and aid in the prevention of damage.

Follow the directions on the label of the product you choose to purchase or ask your hairdresser for guidance and suggestions.

Try a scalp treatment of natural shea butter. I like the 100 organic type as it adds the needed moisture and A & E vitamins. Vitamin F is also in shea butter.
