If you’ve noticed a few hairs on your pillowcase or caught in the shower drain, don’t despair. In many cases, hair loss is entirely treatable. Here are some common and possible causes of hair loss.

A couple of months back, I had written an article about preventing hair loss. In which I mentioned top 10 healthy foods that help to prevent hair loss. If you are interested you can check that article here. In this article I would like to point out five most common and possible causes of hair loss.

Although it is common for men to lose their hair with age, today more women than ever are experiencing hair loss. The causes of hair loss may vary person to person but some of the most common causes are given below:

  • Anemia: Iron deficiency lowers levels of red blood cells, which are crucial to the health of hair follicles. In this case, iron supplements paired with Vitamin C, which aids iron absorption can work as hair saver.
  • Certain Meds: Anti-depressants, diuretics etc. may cause of thinning hair. You need to adjust dosage or try another drug after consulting with your doctor.
  • Hyperthyroidism: Hormone imbalances can raise levels of a chemical called DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) that attacks hair follicles. Prescription meds can help maintain healthy levels.
  • Stress: Extreme levels cause follicles to go dormant or be attacked by the white blood cells and hair loss can result weeks later. In the case of stress, relaxation via therapy, yoga, meditation etc. works wonder. You can also read How to overcome stress

Remember, coconut milk is very good for the hair as it strengthens the hair. You can check out the benefits of coconut milk for hair.

I don’t worry if I see hair caught in the shower drain or in my brush. I think it’s normal for you to shed about 100 hairs a day.
