Beauty Tips and Tricks: Hair Masks

Tips to moisturize your hair.

Since summer is here, I thought that I would do a short beauty section on some homemade hair masks. Lots of people experience dryer then normal hair during the summer months due to the sun. Add that on top of your usually hot iron tools if you use them and by the end of the summer your hair may look like straw. So here are a few things you can whip up at home to put the moisture back into your hair. Enjoy!

  1. Olive Oil and Honey: Mix 3 tablespoons of Olive Oil with 2 tablespoons of honey. Heat in the microwave till warm. Mix them together and put the mixture on to your hair, paying close attention to the ends. Wrap your hair in a warm towel or place a shower cap on and let sit for 30 minutes. Wash hair as normal.
  2. Avocado Mask: Flesh of one full avocado, 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 egg yolk and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Mix all ingredients till creamy. Apply the mixture to your hair and wrap. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash as normal.
  3. Egg Mask: Beat 2 eggs and 2 tablespoons of full fat milk together. Apply the mixture to your hair and wrap. Let it sit for 30 minutes and wash as normal.
  4. Mayonnaise: Yes mayonnaise really does work. Most of us have heard this before, but never have really tried it. Simply massage mayonnaise throughout your hair and wrap. Leave on for 30 minutes then wash as normal. You will be surprised at how well this works.

A few other things to keep in mind if your hair is a little dry. Try to stay away from the hot styling tools as much as you can. Your really hurting your hair more then need be. Try to avoid washing your hair every day. A lot of people don’t realize that you don’t need to wash your hair every single day. Give your natural oils a chance to build up before washing. If you are washing everyday, then try to skip the shampoo and just shampoo every other day. Sometimes shampoo can be rough on your hair.

A short and very powerful article. I really enjoyed reading it and agree with you 100% I had also read that washing hair regularly with shampoo and very hot water can damage it permanently or using a hot blow dryer after a warm bath. The home made tips and recipes for hair treatment sound like good healthy fun for all the family and all that money is saved too. Thanks very much for sharing!

Good article! I will try the avocado one. In general I have mixed feelings about home made masks because I have had good experiences and I have also had horrible experiences. Like once I did this mayonnaise mask and the smell of mayo was so strong that I got disgusted with it and didn’t eat any for a couple of years :) Haha

My mother was a hairstylist/make-up artist. I used to sleep with these same masks. I would seal my head up really well with a shower cap and place an old towel on my pillow. The results are evem more amazing. I had the most gorgeous hair. I never used any hair spray or gels my hair was so much more manageable. I can’t do this now, because I cosleep with my boys. I would stay away from sleeping with the egg mask. The mayo is just as affective. Awesome read, it’s good to see people sticking to the basics.

I never use a dryer, it absolutely fries my hair. I have used mayo and egg whites on my hair and it does my hair good. Can’t do it too often though or your hair gets lank.
