Top 10 common beauty myths and regimes exposed, explained, and redefined.

When it comes to beauty everyone seems to have an opinion or advice but is it true or just an old wives tale. Here are the top 10 beauty myths and regimes!

1. Fake nails will destroy your real nails ~ FALSE

The only way fake nails destroy your own nails is via improper removal (eg. picking them off). If you get them removed properly there will be no damage to your nails.

2. Laser hair removal doesn’t work for people with lighter hair ~ FALSE

Although it works better for darker hairs it still works on light hairs however, it may not remove all hairs (averaging around 80%)at once so you may need to go back another time.

3. Rubbing lemon on your teeth makes them whiter ~ TRUE

Although this beauty advice is true rubbing the lemons acid on your teeth will wear away the enamel and cause further damage. Try using baking soda mixed with water for a whiter smile. You also save the lemons for lemonade!

4. Split ends can be repaired ~ FALSE

The only way to get rid of them is by cutting them of entirely. Try using hydrating products to hydrate your hair to prevent this from happening in the future.

5. You can only stick to one line of brand/products ~ FALSE

Likely created by a cosmetic company to get the user to only buy there products. Try different products until you get the most suitable one for you and don’t just stick to the same brand. Sticking to products from diffeent lines won’t hurt you.

6. You don’t need to use sunscreen on a cloudy day ~ FALSE

This can be very dangerous let alone painful and ugly for the individual. The sun’s UV rays still penetrate the clouds so sunscreen still needs to be applied even if its a cloudy day.

7. Dry skin causes wrinkles ~ FALSE

Dry skin and wrinkles are completely separate from each other. Wrinkles are created from internal and external factors such as sun damage and collagen deterioration, not dry skin. The good news is moisturising temporarily smooths out wrinkles, in the meant time try using anti wrinkle creams.

8. Pulling out a grey hair will cause two to grow back ~ FALSE

This is just an old wives tale. You should expect one grey hair to grow back but two won’t. It takes around six months for hair to be noticed again and in that time often other grey hairs appear around that area making it appear as if two grey hairs have grown back, but in actual fact its from a different skin cell. You can keep pulling out those grey hairs or colour your hair so there are no grey hairs visible.

9. Applying cocoa butter or olive oil can stop stretch marks ~ FALSE

Stretch marks occur when skin expands quickly (e.g. pregnancy), breaking the collagen and elastin fibers that normally support it. In time, they will fade, but the best advice is to maintain healthy skin, which will minimize the effects of stretch marks if they should occur.

10. Eating chocolate causes breakouts ~ FALSE

A very common misconception that pimples are caused by eating chocolate. Pimples are actually caused from factors such as extreme stress or dead skin cells blocking pores. To promote a healthier complexion try eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

These are just a few of the hundred myths out there so whenever you hear new advice the best thing to do is research it before trying it and remember beauty is within the eye of the beholder!
